Originally, Ship's Bells were used to signal the passage of time during a traditional four-hour watch stood by the ship's crew members.  The bell would be rung every half hour thereafter.  To signal the passage of the first half hour the bell would be rung once, after the first hour it would be rung twice, at the end of 1 1/2 hours it would be rung three times, etc.  At the end of four hours, the bell would be rung eight times, and then a new shift of crew members would take over the watch and repeat the same pattern by ringing the bell once after the passage of their first half hour of standing watch.
We carry a total of eight different sizes of these beautiful solid brass Ship's Bells.  All of the Ship's Bells are fully functional and include a braided rope.  Each bell is able to produce a loud, pure tone.  These bells are perfect for mounting on a sailboat or houseboat, outside on a porch, or even in your office.
Our smallest bell has a 2-inch (5.1 cm) diameter, is 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) tall, and weighs 6 ounces (170 grams).  The 3-inch (7.6 cm) diameter bell is 3 inches (7.6 cm) tall and weighs 11.8 ounces (335 grams).  The 4-inch (10.2 cm) diameter bell stands 4 inches (10.2 cm) tall and weighs 1 pound 8 ounces (680 grams).  The 6-inch (15.2 cm) diameter bell is 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall and is 4 pounds 6 ounces (1.98 kg).  The 9-inch (22.9 cm) diameter bell is 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall and weighs 12 pounds, 2 ounces (5.56 kg).  The large 12-inch (30.5 cm) diameter bell is 13 inches (33 cm) tall and weighs a heavy 32 pounds (14.5 kilograms).  The extra large 15-inch (38.5 cm) diameter bell is 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall and weighs a very heavy 45 pounds (20.5 kilograms).  Our largest ship's bell is 18 1/2 inches (47 cm) in diameter, 18 1/2 inches (47 cm) tall and weighs a very heavy 70 pounds (31.7 kilograms).  This ship's bell does not come with a wall mounting bracket. Instead, a solid brass bow shackle is included for mounting the bell.
Sorry but we do not offer custom engraving for any of these solid brass Ship's Bells, although they can be hand engraved by a professional engraver.
The solid brass mounting bracket is included with the purchase of any of the other seven Ship's Bell models.  The 2-inch bell is available for only $9.50.  The 3-inch bell is offered for just $16.90.  The 4-inch bell sells for $39, the 6-inch bell for $55.50, the 9-inch bell is available for $199, the 12-inch bell sells for $519, the 15-inch bell sells for $749, and the 18-inch diameter ship's bell sells for $995.
