The Chief Petty Officer rank is the highest rank that an enlisted person can achieve, and while the Chief Petty
Officer is technically an enlisted person (in charge of all enlisted persons), the Chief Petty Officer, as well
as all Officers ARE AUTHORIZED TO wear this Officer's Cutlass.
All enlisted men were given the standard 1860 Naval Cutlass at
no cost, however, the Chief Petty Officer could purchase and wear this 1860 Officer's Cutlass.
On the other hand, all Regular Officers were required to purchase their own sword.
The 1860 Naval Officer's Cutlass features the USN embellished polished solid brass scalloped shell basket, with a
comfortable leather grip with twisted wire.
The blade has a regulation blade length of 26 inches (66 cm) and is made of tempered high carbon steel.
The blade is stamped with the authentic Navy Anchor and Maker's / Inspector's Marks.

The leather scabbard has the regulation copper rivets on the backside and the leather scabbard and frog
weigh 12.7 ounces (360 grams).

cutlasses produced by the original manufacturers.
