Full Description:
The Stanley London® Navigator's Chart Reading Compass with magnifying glass is a beautiful reproduction of an antique nautical chart magnifying compass.  Early seafarers relied on celestial navigation and primitive means to navigate the seas.  This practice of using crude figures to chart a course typically led to erroneous data, which often meant death at sea.  Fisherman, explorers, pirates, and cartographers quickly learned the critical nature of course data; accuracy was paramount. Nautical charts often contained tiny, difficult to read typeface that compounded the already difficult task at hand.  One instrument developed by early navigators to improve precision was the chart magnifying compass.

The Navigator's Chart Reading Compass has a working compass in a solid brass and glass housing.  The magnetic needle is balanced on a brass extension arm and is completely encased by the magnifying lenses.  The lower lens is flat and smooth, made to glide effortlessly across a reading surface.  The upper, convex lens allows viewing of a clear, magnified surface.  To protect the compass needle while in transit, a rotating knob near the fob operates a needle lift.  The Navigator's Chart Reading Compass also features a brass azimuth ring marked in dark, easy to read 1° graduations.

This chart magnifier and magnetic compass measures 3 inches (7.62 cm) in overall diameter, the domed lens measures 2 7/8 inches (7.3 cm) alone.  The compass weighs 8.6 ounces (243.8 g).  The included hardwood case measures 1 5/8 inches (4.12 cm) tall with the lid closed, 4 1/4 inches (10.7 cm) square, weighs 7.5 ounces (213 grams), and is perfect for storing and displaying the glass and brass compass.  Custom brass plaques are available for the outside or inside lid of the hardwood case.
